The Science of Hypochlorous Acid

The molecule that protects us
Hypochlorous acid is something your body already knows how to make. White blood cells produce it as part of the immune system's first response. When something threatens the skin, hypochlorous acid is what your body reaches for first.
Inside your cells, it's made by combining hydrogen peroxide with chloride ions. Outside the body, we make it the same way it's been made since 1834: by passing a controlled electric current through salt water.
Same molecule. Same chemistry. Just bottled.
Why it works so well
Hypochlorous acid is unusual because of its size, its charge, and how it behaves:
- Small enough to move where larger molecules can't
- Neutrally charged, so it isn't repelled the way charged molecules are
- Fast-reacting, doing its work on contact rather than lingering on skin
That combination is why it's used in wound care and eye care, and why your own immune system chose it. It's effective without being harsh, which is a rare pairing in chemistry.
Why ultra-low salt matters
Salt looks simple on a label. In the chemistry of hypochlorous acid, it behaves like a mischievous extra variable. And when the goal is calming inflamed, barrier-compromised baby skin, you want as few variables as possible.
Here's the first-principles version.
Hypochlorous acid is made by passing an electrical current through saltwater. After the reaction, a good manufacturer removes nearly all of the residual salt. That leftover salt doesn't change the HOCl molecule itself. It changes how the solution behaves on skin.
Baby skin, especially eczema-prone skin, has:
- a weaker barrier
- higher transepidermal water loss
- lower natural oil content
Salt is osmotically active. Even tiny amounts can draw moisture out of the outer layers of skin. On a compromised barrier, that can amplify dryness, cause stinging, or leave a tight feeling. In practical terms: more salt means more irritation potential, even when the HOCl concentration is exactly right.
Ultra-low-salt HOCl does something elegant. It keeps everything hypochlorous acid does well, while reducing that osmotic stress to almost nothing. Pure signal, with nothing competing against the chemistry your baby's skin already understands.
There's a stability dimension too. Excess salt makes a solution degrade faster and drift in pH, which lowers effectiveness over time. A controlled, ultra-low-salt formula stays closer to skin-natural pH and holds hypochlorous acid in its most active form.
Lower salt means gentler, more stable, and closer to what the body naturally produces. Which is exactly what irritated baby skin needs.
Why neutral pH matters
Neutral pH isn't a marketing flourish. It's a way of respecting how skin biology actually works.
Baby skin sits in a narrow pH window. It's more delicate, the lipid barrier is still forming, and the enzymes responsible for repair behave differently than they do in adult skin. Put something too acidic or too alkaline on that surface and you're asking those enzymes and barrier lipids to work outside their comfort zone.
With hypochlorous acid, pH governs two things at once.
First, the chemistry. HOCl exists in equilibrium with the hypochlorite ion, OCl−. Only HOCl is the highly active, body-native form. Neutral or slightly acidic pH pushes that equilibrium toward HOCl, so the solution is both more effective and gentler. Drift alkaline and you lose activity while increasing irritation potential.
This is also the honest answer to a question people ask us: how is this different from bleach? Household bleach is sodium hypochlorite, sitting around pH 11 to 13. Strongly alkaline, which is exactly why it's harsh. Hypochlorous acid sits near neutral, close to the pH of skin itself. Related chemistry, entirely different molecule, entirely different story for skin. The pH is the whole difference.
Second, the biology. Neutral pH is kinder to the stratum corneum, the outer layer that regulates moisture and protects against irritants. Baby skin reacts quickly to pH changes. Anything far from neutral can disrupt the barrier's lipid matrix, dry the skin, and make conditions like eczema worse.
So a neutral pH formula gives you two wins at once: maximum HOCl activity, minimum barrier disruption. Combine it with ultra-low salt and you get a stable, predictable, baby-safe solution. Pure function, without friction.
Why purity matters
Purity matters because hypochlorous acid already is the active chemistry. Anything added to help it ends up interfering with what made it safe and effective in the first place.
There are three layers to this.
Biology. HOCl is the molecule white blood cells produce during repair. Baby skin recognizes it and doesn't need to defend against it. Surfactants, fragrances, preservatives, thickening agents — none of these are part of that natural pathway. Each one introduces a new potential allergen, a new irritant, a new variable for skin that's already sensitive. Fewer variables, lower risk.
Chemistry. Stabilizers exist because making hypochlorous acid that stays balanced over time is genuinely difficult. But stabilizers often shift pH, bind the active HOCl, or create byproducts that reduce what it can do. High-purity HOCl made through precise electrochemistry doesn't need those crutches — if the chemistry is right from the start.
Barrier dynamics. Babies with eczema or irritation already have a compromised barrier. Additives tend to sit on the skin or interact with its lipids in ways that make dryness, redness, and breakdown worse. Pure HOCl evaporates cleanly and leaves nothing behind but support for the skin's own repair signals.
A pure, additive-free formula delivers the molecule the immune system already trusts, at the highest possible effectiveness, with the lowest possible irritation burden. It's as close as we know how to get to giving skin exactly what it's already trying to make.
Stable, not stabilized
There's a difference between a solution that's stabilized and one that's stable, and it's the difference our whole formula rests on.
Stabilizers are additives that hold a difficult solution together. Stability comes from getting the chemistry right in the first place — the correct pH, the right salt content, precise electrochemical conditions. We chose the second path.
It's harder. It also means being honest with you about what it costs: a formula with nothing holding it together artificially has a shorter shelf life than one that does.
We think that's the right trade. But you should know about it, so here it is plainly:
Best used within 3 months of opening and before the noted expiration date. Store out of direct sunlight, at room temperature.

We pass a controlled electric current through pure salt water. Hypochlorous acid is what comes out. Nothing is synthesized, nothing is introduced, nothing is added afterward.
The difficulty isn't the reaction. It's control: holding the pH in the right window, driving residual salt as low as possible, and doing it consistently, batch after batch. That's where the work is, and that's what most of the cost of a bottle actually pays for.
A molecule with many jobs
Hypochlorous acid is used across medicine and food safety — in wound care, eye care, dentistry, and food processing. It's biodegradable, breaking back down into salt and water.
Different formulations carry different regulatory approvals depending on their concentration and intended use. Little Wonder is a cosmetic skincare product. It isn't a disinfectant, a sanitizer, or a medical device, and we don't market it as one.
What the research shows
It's part of the immune system.
Hypochlorous acid is a naturally occurring component of the human innate immune response, released by neutrophils. It's naturally antimicrobial, which is why it's used clinically for wound cleansing.

A 2025 clinical review across dermatology, surgery, ophthalmology, dentistry and other specialties found HOCl well tolerated, with applications including atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and itch.

Where the evidence stops
Every brand in this category will show you a big number. We'd rather show you the edges of what's actually known.
There are no large randomized trials of hypochlorous acid in infants. The research base is strongest in adult wound care and dermatology. The pediatric evidence is promising, but it's thin, and we're not going to dress it up.
No study has been run on Little Wonder specifically. Research on an ingredient is not research on a product. We won't pretend otherwise.
This is skincare, not medicine. It isn't a steroid, an antibiotic, or a replacement for anything your pediatrician has prescribed. If something isn't improving, please talk to them.
